Introduction: Before the iPhone Changed Everything
Today, it is easy to look at the smartphone market and assume that Apple and Android were always destined to dominate it. They were not. Long before the iPhone transformed the industry, Microsoft was already deeply involved in mobile computing and had built an ecosystem that connected handheld devices, business software, developers, mobile networks, and Windows PCs.
The story of Microsoft’s mobile ambitions is therefore not simply a story about a company that “lost” the smartphone race.
