Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, addressed the growing fascination with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at TiECon Mumbai, aiming to provide a grounded perspective on the technology. I have seen several normal, ordinary programs touted as AI,” Murthy said.
Murthy believes that true AI is based on two main principles: Machine Learning and Deep Learning. While Machine Learning focuses on supervised algorithms that require a lot of data input, Deep Learning uses unsupervised algorithms, simulating the human brain’s decision-making process. These unsupervised algorithms, Murthy suggests, hold the potential to push AI toward more human-like capabilities.
He emphasized that current AI systems, by and large, do not live up to their hype. Instead of truly innovative systems, many are simply old-fashioned coding techniques dressed up as AI. Murthy’s perspective suggests that real progress in AI lies in deep learning and neural networks, which can evolve independently and generate new branches of understanding and action.

While acknowledging the inevitable disruption AI will bring to the workforce, Murthy remained optimistic about its overall economic impact. “Every technology eliminates certain roles, but when applied supportively, it can expand the economy,” he noted. This balanced view recognized that, although AI may lead to job losses in certain sectors, its broader application could stimulate new opportunities, drive growth, and create entirely new industries.
Murthy’s remarks did not shy away from the reality of job displacement but urged entrepreneurs to focus on job creation. “I’m confident each of you will spawn hundreds of thousands of jobs—that’s how you tackle poverty. Handouts have never lifted any nation out of poverty,” Murthy added, emphasizing the role of entrepreneurs in shaping the future of work and contributing to economic development.
