Personal data leakage of more than 40,000 individuals at Osaka University or improper entry to the reservation system for accommodation.

Osaka University has reported that the on-campus accommodation reservation system portal may have been hacked inappropriately from off-campus and that sensitive details may have been compromised from users of the system. Data details such as the names, telephone numbers, addresses and e-mail addresses of 43,213 accommodation and dormitory users at 15 campus locations may have been leaked, it is said.

Unauthorized access was detected by an outsourced monitoring firm on December 1, 2020. On the same day, contact with the server was cut off and the use of the reservation system for on-campus lodging was discontinued. When we requested an external firm responsible for system construction and maintenance to examine the consequences of unauthorized entry, we learned that the directory containing personal information has been erased.
