New EA Gaming Leak Shared on Reddit: Inside Project Rene (Formerly “The Sims 5”)

Hello, fellow gamers! I’m back to bring you the latest updates on EA/Maxis’s upcoming title, “Project Rene,” previously known as The Sims 5. Though we were all excited for the next generation of The Sims, it seems that direction has shifted. Just yesterday, a playtest took place, showcasing a new segment of the game featuring basic Live Mode gameplay. I managed to dive into it for a couple of hours, and I’m here to share my findings with you.

Note: This is likely just the first part of a larger leak. We’re currently working on a full datamine to uncover more hidden details, akin to previous posts related to Project Rene from a few months ago.

For those who missed it, check out my previous posts featuring screenshots and videos from the first build, which included a full map and build mode.

In this post, I’ll focus on delivering accurate information while keeping my opinions separate. Let’s dive in!

What is Project Rene?

According to the Google Play Store, Project Rene is part of “The Sims Labs: The Hub.” Here’s a brief overview:

  • Explore a Parisian neighborhood filled with unique activities and stylish rewards.
  • Pick your Sim, each with their own story, and join friends to explore a vibrant community together.
  • Engage in activities like working at the local café, completing quests, and discovering hidden collectibles.

The Sims Labs games are prototype experiences that focus on testing smaller game concepts. Keep in mind that features in this app may not represent the final direction or content of any upcoming Sims game.

The Bigger Picture

Project Rene is set in a Paris-inspired world and is just one part of a broader framework called “The Sims Hub.” This framework will include The Sims 4, MySims, The Sims: Project Stories, and of course, Project Rene. A key feature of Project Rene is its emphasis on collaborative multiplayer experiences. Players can travel together, interact, build relationships, and engage in text or voice chat while exploring the game world. NPCs are still present, reminiscent of previous installments.

Gameplay Overview

Unfortunately, this recent build was only available on mobile (Android), whereas the first build had a full PC version. I used a mid-range device with max settings, but I won’t disclose the specific model for privacy reasons.

This playtest focused on a very small segment of the game. Notably, there was no Create a Sim feature available, although a developer confirmed it will be included in future playtests. Players can choose from four preset Sims, with one glitching into a named Sim called “Rory.”

After selecting a Sim, players are greeted with initial quests that change daily. The primary gameplay involves working at a café, where NPC Sims arrive and place orders. Players must collect items like coffee, espresso, or croissants to serve them, but the options are limited. Earning simoleons can feel repetitive, especially since leveling up only provides a few currencies or new name badges.

Players can spend their hard-earned simoleons at a clothing shop, though customization options are limited to five preset outfits. The visual graphics are interesting; they appear grainy and somewhat blurry, likely due to the optimization phase of development.

Final Remarks

I encourage you to ask any questions about this playtest, and I’ll do my best to answer before my access ends tomorrow night. After that, I’ll be drawing from previously known information.

Thank you for tuning in! Stay tuned for more updates as we uncover the secrets of Project Rene!
