One Code to Rule Them All: Nigeria Standardizes Telecom Shortcodes
Nigerians rejoice! Gone are the days of memorizing a different code for every mobile network operator (MNO) for tasks like checking your balance or recharging your airtime. In a move designed to simplify the lives of subscribers, Nigeria’s major telcos – MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile – are implementing a unified set of shortcodes for all telecom services. This means you’ll only need to remember a single code for various services across all networks.
Directed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), this new system will come into effect on May 17, 2023. Previously, each MNO had its own unique codes for various services, making it a hassle for subscribers with multiple lines from different networks. The new system streamlines the process by assigning the same code for specific services across all networks.
For instance, the code 310 will now be used for checking your balance on any network, regardless of whether you’re subscribed to MTN, Airtel, Glo, or 9mobile. Similarly, 311 will be the new code for recharging your airtime across all networks.
The NCC has made it mandatory for all old shortcodes to be deactivated, so familiarizing yourself with the new codes is essential. This change is part of the NCC’s regulatory modernization program, aiming to improve the overall service experience for telecom consumers in Nigeria.
What Undercode Says:
This new development is a welcome change for Nigerian mobile phone users. Standardizing shortcodes eliminates the confusion of memorizing multiple codes for different networks and services. This simplification will undoubtedly benefit users, especially those with multiple SIM cards.
Furthermore, the
It’s important to note that while some shortcodes have been completely revamped (like using 311 for recharge instead of network-specific codes), some essential codes like 2442 for Do-Not-Disturb and 3232 for mobile number portability remain unchanged.
Overall, the standardization of shortcodes in Nigeria represents a positive step towards a more user-friendly and streamlined telecom experience. By simplifying the process of accessing essential services, this change empowers users and promotes a more efficient telecom ecosystem in the country.
