These operations used ChatGPT for social engineering, content generation, and reconnaissance into sensitive areas such as U.S. defense and satellite communications. In some cases, the actors impersonated journalists or consultants to gather intelligence.
Another campaign, dubbed Uncle Spam, produced polarizing U.S. political content using fake personas to appear as military veterans. They sought tools to extract personal data from social media, but like the others, the campaign failed to generate meaningful traction.
Across the board, OpenAI noted that although these campaigns were technologically diverse and globally distributed, they remained in early stages or low-impact categories due to limited authentic reach and timely disruption.
