A Ukrainian national, Mark Sokolovsky, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in operating the malicious Raccoon Infostealer malware. This powerful tool, which infiltrated millions of computers worldwide, was used to steal sensitive personal data, including login credentials, financial information, and other private records.
Sokolovsky, also known by the online aliases “Photix,” “raccoonstealer,” and “black21jack77777,” was a key player in a sophisticated cybercrime operation. He facilitated the leasing of Raccoon Infostealer for $200 per month, enabling cybercriminals to deploy it through phishing attacks. The stolen data was then used for various illicit activities, such as financial fraud, identity theft, and ransomware attacks.
In a collaborative effort, international law enforcement agencies successfully dismantled the Raccoon Infostealer operation and arrested Sokolovsky in March 2022.
