Vietnamese EV Startup Gears Up for Global Expansion
VinFast, a rising star in the electric vehicle (EV) market, announced plans to build a second production facility in its home country, Vietnam. This significant expansion aims to double the company’s output and meet the burgeoning demand for its electric cars.
The new factory, located in the central province of Ha Tinh, will mirror the production capacity of VinFast’s existing facility in Haiphong, churning out an impressive 300,000 vehicles annually. The focus will be on the popular VF3 city car and the VF5 crossover, two models that have already garnered significant interest in the Vietnamese market. Construction is expected to begin in July 2025, with operations commencing shortly thereafter.
“Demand in international markets is growing rapidly,” said Vingroup CEO and Chairman Nguusd Viet Quang. “The construction of an additional electric car factory… will create a solid foundation for an important and explosive development phase ahead for VinFast.”

Beyond Vietnam: A Global EV Player in the Making?
VinFast’s ambitions extend far beyond Vietnam. The automaker has already established dealership and aftersales service agreements in the Middle East and Europe. They’re also planning a production facility in India, with a projected capacity of 150,000 EVs annually. Additionally, VinFast began US deliveries of the VF8 in 2022, though the model faces a current investigation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) following a fatal accident.
What Undercode Says:
VinFast’s rapid expansion is a bold move in the ever-competitive EV market. Doubling their production capacity within Vietnam signals their commitment to capturing a larger share of the domestic market, particularly with the well-received VF3 and VF5 models.
However, the company faces significant challenges. The NHTSA investigation into the VF8 casts a shadow over their US ambitions. Balancing aggressive expansion with ensuring vehicle safety will be crucial to their long-term success.
VinFast’s success hinges on their ability to translate domestic success into a global brand. They’ll need to navigate established players, adapt to diverse customer needs across regions, and ensure the quality and safety of their vehicles on a larger scale.
If they can overcome these hurdles, VinFast has the potential to become a major force in the global EV market. Their innovative online sales strategy and strong financial backing provide a solid foundation for continued growth. The coming years will be critical for VinFast as they strive to transform from a Vietnamese startup into a global EV leader.
