Apple has officially refreshed its laptop portfolio with the launch of the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models powered by the M5 family of chips. The announcement signals more than just a routine hardware upgrade. It marks a strategic shift toward deeper artificial intelligence integration at the silicon level, promising dramatic gains in speed, efficiency, and professional-grade performance.

With enhanced CPUs, next-generation GPUs, and advanced Neural Accelerators embedded into every core, Apple is positioning the M5 series as its most AI-ready Mac platform to date. From students and everyday users to professional creators and developers, the company is aiming to deliver unmatched performance across the board.

MacBook Air with M5: Power Meets Portability

Apple introduced the new MacBook Air featuring the M5 chip, describing it as the most capable version of the world’s most popular laptop. The upgraded processor includes a faster CPU, an improved GPU, and a Neural Accelerator integrated into every core, allowing the device to handle demanding creative tasks and complex AI workloads effortlessly.

The base configuration now starts with 512GB of high-speed SSD storage, doubling the capacity of the previous generation. Users can upgrade storage up to 4TB, providing significant space for professional files, creative assets, and large datasets.

Connectivity has also been modernized with Apple’s new N1 wireless chip, enabling support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. This ensures faster and more reliable wireless performance. The design remains thin and lightweight, built with durable aluminium and featuring a vibrant Liquid Retina display.

The MacBook Air includes a 12MP Center Stage camera, immersive Spatial Audio, and up to 18 hours of battery life. It also supports up to two external displays through its two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Available in 13-inch and 15-inch variants, customers can choose from Sky Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and Silver finishes.

Pre-orders began on March 4, with availability starting March 11.

MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max: Built for Professionals

Apple also unveiled new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models equipped with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These machines are designed for professional users requiring extreme performance in video editing, 3D rendering, AI modeling, and software development.

The new chips reportedly feature the world’s fastest CPU cores, alongside next-generation GPUs and Neural Accelerators embedded within each core. Apple claims up to four times faster AI performance compared to the previous generation and up to eight times faster performance than M1-powered MacBook Pro models.

Storage performance has also been enhanced. The M5 Pro variant now starts with 1TB of SSD storage, while the M5 Max begins at 2TB. Apple states that SSD speeds are up to twice as fast as earlier models.

Like the MacBook Air, the Pro models also integrate the N1 wireless chip, offering Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support for improved connectivity. The laptops are available in Space Black and Silver, with pre-orders opening March 4 and shipments beginning March 11.

New Studio Display Enhancements

Alongside the laptops, Apple introduced updates to its Studio Display. The display now includes an upgraded 12MP Center Stage camera with improved image quality and Desk View support. It also features a three-microphone studio-quality array and a six-speaker system with Spatial Audio.

Thunderbolt 5 connectivity has been added, allowing faster accessory connections and the ability to daisy-chain multiple displays. Apple says the display is designed to perfectly complement the MacBook Pro lineup, catering to both everyday users and creative professionals.

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Pricing in India

In India, the 13.6-inch M5 MacBook Air is priced at Rs 1,19,900, while the 15.3-inch version costs Rs 1,44,900. For comparison, the previous M4 MacBook Air started at Rs 99,900.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip, featuring 24GB RAM and 1TB storage, is priced at Rs 2.99 lakh. The higher-end M5 Max variant with 36GB RAM and 2TB storage costs Rs 4.29 lakh.

These pricing tiers position the new lineup firmly within the premium segment, especially for professional users.

What Undercode Say:

Apple Is Clearly Betting Big on AI at the Silicon Level

The introduction of Neural Accelerators in every core signals Apple’s long-term strategy. Instead of relying solely on software-based AI enhancements, the company is embedding intelligence directly into its hardware architecture. This approach gives Apple tighter control over performance optimization and power efficiency.

The M5 Generation Is About Future-Proofing

With Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thunderbolt 5, and expanded SSD speeds, Apple is clearly designing these machines for longevity. Many users will not fully utilize these capabilities today, but the hardware ensures readiness for evolving AI-driven workflows and high-speed ecosystems.

Storage Strategy Reflects Changing User Demands

Starting the MacBook Air at 512GB addresses a long-standing criticism about Apple’s base storage offerings. As AI tools, creative software, and media files grow larger, 256GB is no longer practical for many users. Doubling the base capacity aligns the Air more closely with modern expectations.

The MacBook Pro Is Targeting AI Developers and Content Creators

The claims of 4x faster AI performance compared to the previous generation are significant. AI model training, video editing in 8K, 3D rendering, and simulation workloads are increasingly demanding. Apple is making it clear that the MacBook Pro is not just a creative tool, but a serious AI workstation.

Pricing Strategy Shows Confidence

The price jump compared to earlier generations suggests Apple is confident in the value proposition of the M5 series. While the MacBook Air remains relatively accessible within the premium segment, the MacBook Pro models clearly target enterprise users and high-income professionals.

Competition Pressure Is Increasing

With competitors integrating AI accelerators and dedicated NPUs into laptops, Apple cannot afford incremental upgrades. The M5 branding and performance claims suggest a strong response to growing competition in the AI-laptop space.

Design Stability Signals Maturity

Apple did not radically change the physical design. Instead, the focus remains on internal performance. This shows that Apple believes its current MacBook design language has reached maturity, and innovation now lies primarily in silicon and software integration.

Thunderbolt 5 Is a Quiet but Important Upgrade

While not heavily marketed, Thunderbolt 5 may become critical for professionals working with multiple high-resolution displays and high-speed storage arrays. It reflects Apple’s ongoing push to dominate the high-end professional workflow ecosystem.

The Bigger Picture: Apple’s AI Ecosystem Expansion

The M5 launch aligns with Apple’s broader push into AI-enhanced productivity. The company appears to be building a fully integrated hardware-software AI ecosystem where Macs, iPads, and other devices share intelligent capabilities seamlessly.
