Audi A6 Avant E-Tron: A New Era of Digital Car Keys
Audi is taking a major step toward digital convenience with its latest A6 Avant E-Tron, becoming the first model from the company to support Apple’s Car Key feature. While the feature hasn’t been officially announced by Audi, it was discovered within the Audi app during a review of the vehicle.
This innovation aligns Audi with other premium automakers embracing smartphone-based vehicle access. Since the A6 Avant E-Tron shares its platform with Porsche EVs, it’s highly likely that future Porsche electric models will also support Apple Car Key.
What Is Apple Car Key?
Apple Car Key allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to store a digital version of their car key in the Wallet app. Depending on the implementation, the feature can function in two ways:
- Manual Mode: Users can lock and unlock the vehicle via their device.
- Passive Mode: The car automatically locks when the owner walks away and unlocks upon their return.
Additionally, Car Key supports shared access, enabling car owners to grant temporary or permanent access to other trusted contacts.
Audi A6 Avant E-Tron Gets Car Key Support
French tech site Mac4Ever discovered that Audi has quietly added Apple Car Key compatibility to the A6 Avant E-Tron through its mobile app. The feature works via Bluetooth and Ultra-Wideband (UWB), eliminating the need for the phone to be placed near an RFID reader—it can remain in the user’s pocket.
