The Python Package Index (PyPI), a popular repository for Python packages, has recently been targeted by cybercriminals. Two malicious packages, “zebo” and “cometlogger,” were discovered by Fortinet FortiGuard Labs, designed to steal sensitive user data from compromised systems.

These malicious packages employed various tactics to evade detection and achieve their objectives. “Zebo,” for instance, utilized obfuscation techniques, such as hex-encoded strings, to mask the URLs of the command-and-control servers used to communicate with the attackers. This obfuscation made it more difficult for security tools to identify and block the malicious traffic.

“Cometlogger” exhibited a range of malicious behaviors, including the ability to dynamically manipulate files, inject webhooks into systems, steal sensitive information, and even detect and circumvent virtual machines. These capabilities allowed the attackers to maintain persistent access to the compromised systems and exfiltrate valuable data, such as login credentials, personal information, and sensitive corporate data.
