AI is undeniably in demand. 88% of business leaders prioritize AI skills over other competencies when considering promotions or job assignments, and 84% believe verified AI skills carry more weight than a degree in hiring decisions. In fact, AI is increasingly seen as a key factor in headcount decisions, with 80% of L&D leaders confident that AI will lead to workforce expansion, rather than contraction, in their organizations.

However, the view from employees tells a different story. Only 4% of employees believe AI skills are consistently prioritized in promotions, and more than half of them feel their organization’s leadership has poorly communicated the importance of AI to their career advancement. This disconnect leads to frustration on the employee side, as nearly half of respondents feel that possessing AI skills doesn’t significantly impact their career trajectory.

This gap in understanding between leadership and employees suggests that companies are struggling to translate the value of AI into concrete upskilling opportunities. In fact, only 25% of employees reported receiving any AI-specific training over the past year.
