A New Chun-Li Built From Muscle, Discipline, and Obsession
When Chun-Li first appeared in Street Fighter II, she immediately became one of the most recognizable characters in fighting-game history. Her identity has always been tied to speed, precision, martial arts mastery, and perhaps most famously, her powerful legs. Across decades of games, Capcom has repeatedly emphasized Chun-Li’s athletic build, turning her distinctive silhouette into an essential part of the character.
For Callina Liang, bringing that physicality to the big screen meant going far beyond simply learning choreography.
The actress, who portrays Chun-Li in Legendary’s upcoming Street Fighter movie, underwent an intense physical transformation designed to make the character’s signature fighting style feel convincing. Her preparation reportedly involved hours of martial arts training every day, a dramatic increase in food intake, and an unusually detailed study of Chun-Li’s movements across the Street Fighter franchise.
The result was a transformation that reportedly increased the circumference of each of Liang’s thighs by around 6.5 centimeters during filming.
That kind of change does not happen accidentally. It required a combination of resistance training, martial arts practice, nutrition, recovery, and an enormous amount of commitment.
Chun-Li’s Legs Were More Than a Visual Detail
Chun-Li is not simply a character who happens to have muscular legs. Her fighting style is fundamentally built around them.
Her famous kicks have become some of the most recognizable attacks in fighting games, and Capcom has consistently portrayed her as a fighter whose lower-body strength is central to her combat identity.
That created a particular challenge for Liang.
Playing Chun-Li convincingly meant that the actress could not rely entirely on stunt doubles or visual effects. Her physical presence had to communicate the same strength audiences associate with the character.
Two Hours of Martial Arts Training Every Day
Liang explained that her preparation included approximately two hours of martial arts training each day.
The routine incorporated Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Wushu, giving her exposure to several different approaches to striking, footwork, balance, and movement.
Each discipline offered something different.
Taekwondo provided extensive kicking technique and flexibility work. Muay Thai introduced powerful striking mechanics and conditioning. Wushu contributed fluidity, movement control, and the visual language associated with traditional Chinese martial arts.
Together, those disciplines gave Liang a foundation for portraying Chun-Li as something more than a performer executing predetermined movie choreography.
The Diet Became Almost as Difficult as the Training
The physical transformation also required Liang to dramatically alter her diet.
During her bulking phase, she said she was eating as many as 12 eggs a day and having a meal approximately every two hours.
That is an enormous amount of food to fit into a normal daily routine, particularly while simultaneously completing demanding martial arts training.
Liang recalled that the eating schedule became so intense that she was sometimes on the verge of throwing up.
The experience illustrates an important reality of movie transformations: building a character’s physique can be physically and mentally demanding even when the final result looks effortless on screen.
Six-and-a-Half Centimeters Changed Everything
According to Liang, the training and nutritional program produced a dramatic result.
By the end of filming, her thighs had reportedly increased by approximately 6.5 centimeters each.
That statistic immediately stands out because
